Vasant Davé's anecdotes in some leading publications.
Reader's Digest, August, 1974Bridegrooms in India traditionally go to their brides on horseback, and at certain peak times for weddings, the demand for horses outstrips the supply. One young man solved the problem by borrowing an old animal from a visiting circus. Perched triumphantly in the saddle, he was just congratulating himself on his good fortune when the band struck up a lively note. At once the horse, true to its circus training, gave a resounding neigh and smartly reared up on its hind legs.
Business India, Sept 10 to 23, 1984
Conducting market surveys for years, I wondered why respondents from South
India addressed me as 'Vasanth' with that bonus 'h'. I stumbled upon the
explanation recently while being screened over the phone by a prospect's
secretary. Sensing her difficulty in getting my name, I rattled off the usual V
for Vizag, A for Ahmedabad, and so on.
"Let me see if I have got it right,"
she said. " V for Victory, A for Achievement, S for Success, A for Achievement
again, N for Noble, T for Triumph, and H for Happiness."
"You may drop the
'happiness' part at the end, madam," I corrected.
"With a Victory, a couple
of Achievements and all that, the Happiness has to follow -- silently if
you wish," she said with a chuckle, as she put me through to her boss.
Shankar's Weekly, (India) August 24, 1975
Explaining the metamorphosis and living habits of frogs to a nature study class, my sister discovered the children's response unusually encouraging. At the end of the period, wishing to show her appreciation by a bonus story, she narrated how a sweet little frog pleased a fairy, got transformed into a handsome prince, and wooed a princess. As she concluded, a small boy in the front row sadly remarked, "Poor frog! He lost all the fun."
