
Market for Ground Handling Services on Indian
Airports
Indian airports are projected to handle cargo traffic of 1 million tonnes by 2017. The Union Budget 2003-04 allocated US $ 700 million for renovation and modernisation of New Delhi and Mumbai airports. In addition to Amritsar, Lakshwadeep and Leh airports, those in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orrisa, Sikkim and Tripura have been allocated US $ 160 million.
A 2001 report in the Economic Times placed the market potential for Ground Handling Services on Indian Airports to US $ 120 million annually. It included loading/unloading cargo and baggage, handling passengers, cleaning the aircraft, step ladder services, security, refueling, warehouse supervision, load control, weights & balances, parking the aircraft and maintenance of AC. The market was shared by Air India (58%), Indian Airlines (17%), Cambata (13%), and Rendezvous and miscellaneous airlines (12%). The Government planned to allow 4 new ground handling agencies each in Delhi and Mumbai and 3 each in Calcutta, Chennai and Thiru-vanantha-puram.
