Since the 19th century, India has conducted census at the end of almost every decade. The latest was carried out in 2 phases. During the first phase from April to September 2000, all residential and non-residential buildings were recorded, and information on households and amenities was collected. The second phase was executed from 9th to 28th February 2001, as 2 million enumerators and supervisors spread out across the sub-continent to enumerate its human capital.
