
Indian Railways’ buying-list for safety-measures up to
2005

Indian Railways set up a US $3,400 mn. Safety Fund, of which it spent US $ 497 mn. for upgrading structure of the tracks in fiscal year 2001. The work involved laying 60-kg. rails on concrete sleepers and eliminating fish-plated joints by welding. Further US $ 703 mn. are earmarked for the same purpose during the fiscal year 2002.
IR has also planned the following safety measures:
- Replacing signalling
gear at 950 stations
- Installing Ultra-Sonic Rail Flaw Detectors (USFD) to
identify any damage in rails well in time
- Setting up electronic weigh
bridges to check wagons in motion
- Introducing latest track recording cars
and on-track machines
- Rebuilding 3,000 bridges
